October Meeting

The day we had all been waiting for.  The Chinese Whispers would be revealed.  This all started last year when we split into two groups, each group was given a photograph that only the first person in the group could look at.  That person did a piece of work based on that photograph and then the piece of work was passed on to the next person.  No one else saw the photograph and just did an interpretation of the work they had been given.  It is amazing how it develops and changes.  Below are the two photographs and the first two pieces taken from it.  If you want to see the last pieces, you will need to come to our exhibition next May when they will all be on display.

As I mentioned above, we have settled a date for our exhibition on the 10th and 11th May 2014 at
Ayton Village Hall, so keep a look for notices nearer the date.

There were 18 of us in the hall this week so it was very busy.  Christina was making cling film sandwiches, Liz was finishing off some book covers and Barbara was in the long back room making cords.  It was a lovely bright sunny day, a shame to be indoors really but we all enjoyed ourselves and there was chocolate cake as it was National Chocolate Week.

Main September Meeting

Most people are now back from their summer holidays and were eager to get started working again.  We had much discussion about the coming workshops with Isobel Hall in October and November. It is quite difficult to get the things you need in this area, however we have managed to source kozo paper in large size sheets and I found cocos fibre, Jackie has found some Mod Podge but it will be expensive to order from the internet because of the weight.  However, we are looking forward to our workshops and I am sure it will be fine on the day.
Jackie had visited the exhibition Cloth and Memory 2, at Salt's Mill and gave it an excellent review, so much so, I have persuaded my daughter to go with me in the half term break.  You can easily fit in a trip to Bombay Stores on the same day.  The exhibition is on until the 3rd November. 
People are now starting to concentrate on their exhibition pieces and they are all coming on well.  It is amazing how everyone has a different take on the same topic.
Next month we bring our 'Chinese Whispers' pieces and see where it has taken us.  For those who don't know what we are doing - all will be revealed on the October blog.

1st Thursday Group - September meeting

The first Thursday Group met last week and had a busy morning.  Unfortunately I forgot to take my camera so I couldn't record what everyone was doing.  Needless to say, they are all busy working on their 'Elements' pieces ready for the exhibition next March. Maureen and Val were updating their sketchbooks, Ann is still working out how to translate her inspiration (which is fabulous) and Pam, Marilyn, Angela and Barbara were stitching.

 I have just bought a book called 'Make it Personal' by Hilary Beattie and I can recommend it for creating your own backgrounds and fabrics.  Lots of information on printing and suggestions for taking it further.  She is planning a series of books on how to get from your initial inspiration to a finished piece so I am looking forward to the next one.

Yesterday I went on a workshop with Lindsey Tyson doing Devore and Transfer Printing.  We had a very busy day but we managed to get several pieces of fabric devored and then we printed over the top of some of them as well as printing on other fabrics.  It was a very good day and the cake was delicious.  Here is some of my work.

August Meeting

We were a few members missing today due to holidays, etc. but fourteen of us got a bit of work done.

We have confirmed the 22nd and 23rd of March 2014 as a date for our next exhibition so everyone now has a timescale to work to.  The exhibition will feature our main body of work on 'Elements' but we will also be displaying work done in workshops and other experimental things we have done.

One of the members, Barbara, has had her weaving selected for the next exhibition at the Quilt Museum in York.  It will be on display from the 6th September to the 30th November.  The Quilt Museum have started putting small exhibitions of different types of work to compliment their main exhibitions of quilts and patchwork and I think it works well.

Maureen and Barbara have both been going backwards on their work since last month but the changes they have made are for the better!  Christina brought her granddaughter with her today and we have all been encouraging her with her sewing.

 

 

Liz has created this lovely image of the Taj Mahal using one of her screen prints as the background. 

Jackie has been doing some more printing.  The top piece is a thermofax print on some hand dyed fabric.  The bottom one is leaf rubbings using water soluble crayons then the piece is dipped in water to bring out the colours and make some of them run.  It looks really good.

 

 

July Meeting

This was the smallest attendance I've seen for a while due to various reasons but it meant that those of us who did come got lots of work done.  Maureen was continuing with the piece she was working on earlier in the month (see photo below) and it is looking very interesting. 

Moira and Christina had been on the Regional Summer School with the Embroiderers' Guild and had done a two day workshop with Rachel Lombard working with brown paper.  The results below were stunning and set us all off collecting brown paper bags.

Moira also brought along a piece she had done some years ago using sugar paper and machine embroidery which had lovely subtle colours.

Anita has been trying out dissolvable paper, following instructions from Maggie Grey.  Think I will have another go at this, it turned out really well.

We have two workshops with Isobel Hall coming up and a trip to the Bowes Museum in September so we are going to be busy from now on with our exhibition looming next March.  Those who are members of the Embroiderers' Guild also have to think about their competitions as well.

I mentioned on the last blog about our book covers we did for the local libraries.  Below is a photograph of them when they were at Ayton.  They have been to Pickering and are now at Malton and Norton.  We hope a few other libraries will be interested in displaying them too.  They make a nice competition for children, matching the pictures to the books.

First Thursday Group

The First Thursday Group met today and there were six of us present.  Everyone was busy but we did get distracted by some books that Ann had brought in but also by a suprise visit from Liz who brought our copies of Workbox magazine to show us the article with our book covers in.  The photographs have really come out well.  The display has now finished at Pickering Library and will travel to Malton and Norton libraries for the summer holidays. 

Jenny brought some transfer painting to do and we were all enthralled by how they were coming out.  Unfortunately the one below wasn't dry before she left so we will have to wait to see the result.

Maureen was working on painted bondaweb and kunin felt to produce this work based on a distorted photograph (think it was a train).

Pam is doing 'water' as part of her Elements theme and she is working on this seascape.

Workshop with Dionne Swift

After a very enjoyable workshop with Dionne last November doing sketchbooks, we booked her again to do some screen printing.

She had us working very hard all day but we all came away with three pieces of printing (except Maureen who left one of hers behind) using different screen printing techniques. 

Everyone is working hard on their 'Elements' theme and one or two used this opportunity to produce some work on that theme.  I have purchased one of Dionne's screens for the group so anyone can borrow it and have another go.  I am about to make a bag to carry it around in - watch this space!

Bookings are under way for our trip to the Bowes Museum on 26th September.  We have a coach of 29 seats to fill so if anyone has a friend or relation that would like to come (men included as long as they don't mind being in a minority) please let Anita know.
